The poster for the turn of the year 2019–2020 from the Basel School of Design appears without text, but not without a message.
The hand, heart and brain are the cornerstones of education and many societies and cultures. According to Pestalozzi, those who make use of these three elements can create something good, interesting and valuable.
The heart stands for ethics, the brain for intelligence and the hand for skilful action.
The design deliberately exaggerates: here, seven colours (CMYK according to scale and three special neon Pantone colours) are stylised into a riot of colour or super-colourfulness.
Emoticons, which we use daily on our screens in social media, are printed oversized on paper in their original image quality, and the New Year's greeting, like everything else, must first be deciphered or decoded.
