Armin Hofmann — 100

For the exhibition DIE ÄRA HOFMANN (The Hofmann Era) in Basel, Fidel Peugeot wrote down the following memories of his time as a student in Hofmann's class.

Armin Hofmann, Wolfgang Weingart and René Pulfer were the influential professors at Fidel Peugeot's School of Design from 1981 to 1985 (diploma).

1985. 
Basel, Switzerland. School of Design. 
Diploma celebration graphic arts class. 

Much time has passed since our last handshake. My youthful wildness had only colors in mind. Your vision of black and white was unfathomable to me. Neither of us wanted to argue, so we kept quiet for two years. 

Not quite. One day you put your hand on my shoulder and said: "I can't help you, you have to find your own way. Go and do what you can't let go. Stay tuned and stay yourself!" I took that to heart. 

Thank you so much for your liberating advice, you made my life in design. Happy Birthday, Mastermind Armin Hofmann.

Basel, Schule für Gestaltung. 
Diplomfeier Grafikklasse. 

Viel Zeit ist vergangen seit unserem letzten Händeschütteln. Meine jugendliche Wildheit hatte nur Farben im Sinn. Ihr Schwarz und Weiss waren für mich unergründlich. Diskutieren wollten wir beide nicht, also haben wir uns für zwei Jahre angeschwiegen. 

Nicht ganz. Eines Tages legten Sie Ihre Hand auf meinen Arm und sprachen: „Ich kann dir nicht helfen, du musst deinen Weg selber finden. Gehe und tue, was du nicht lassen kannst. Bleibe dran und bleibe Du selbst!“ 

Das habe ich mir zu Herzen genommen. Dankeschön und Glückwünsche lieber Armin Hofmann.
